ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II

This module introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment. In this studio, students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises; firstly, an investigation of the architectural spaces and construction through precedent studies; and secondly, an exploration of form and space through architectural conceptualisation. Finally, students will design a small freestanding structure that meets user requirements and engages with the site context.

PROJECT 1:Diagramming Architectural Principles

This assignment taught us how to diagram architectural principles through the process of abstracting and simplifying an idea so that it can be easily understood. In a group of 5, we were assigned to diagram architectural principles and create models, for each diagram.

Project 2: Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality Tropical Rainforest Discovery Platform

Our main task was to generate and craft a Tropical Rainforest Discovery Platform that has spatial experience, with a maximum volume of 125m3. This assignment requires us to research tropical rainforest settings that we would like to discover hypothetically; What type of setting would we like to discover? Animal natural habitat? Mangrove forest?  What sort of unique characteristics of the setting? (Muddy, hilly, rocky, tree top, etc) How do we want to explore such species and settings?

Project 3: Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User: Tropical Wildlife Discovery Unit

For the final task, were required to design a Tropical Wildlife Discovery Unit at Bukit Jalil Recreational Park. The Discovery Unit should include a tropical rainforest discovery area (which was expanded from Project 2), resting, discussing, and such within the built-up space of maximum. The structure was within the built-up space of a maximum of 100 sqm and was able to accommodate 2 people, including my self and a discovery partner, in my case I chose my brother.
